Maps 'n stuff
If you're planning to chart your own adventure around Kakadu and Arnhem Land, collect maps and local advice before you set out. You'll need to apply for a permit if you wish to enter Arnhem Land on your own. You can do this by visiting the Northern Land Council website. An easier option is to just join a tour which has pre-approved access.
Get details on road conditions, permits and the best places to camp, walk or view wildlife. Also available are specialised maps and freebies dotted with suggested activities and attractions.
Bowali Visitor Centre
The best place to start in Kakadu is the Bowali Visitor Centre. The centre rests on land owned by the Mirrar clan and is named after the local area and creek. Here you'll find helpful staff to help you on your way.
Get up-to-date information about things to see and do in Kakadu, and catch the audio-visual presentation that occurs every half hour to get a fresh perspective on the region.
To get there, turn west off the Kakadu Highway, 5km west of Jabiru.
The centre is open from 8am to 5pm daily.
